Gouden schijffibula

Nederland middeleeuwen

Gouden bovenplaat en bronzen onderplaat met resten van ijzeren naald. Umbo-shaped fibula with a copper alloy base plate and golden front. The front sheet is decorated with filigree patterns and cloisonné cells in the shape of bird heads, filled with a red glass or garnet. The birds' eyes and the cell in the middle of the fibula are filled with a white opaque substance. Very fine textile remains are preserved on the back. They are mineralized with iron corrosion, indicating that the needle and spring were probably made of iron.
