Egypt: the land of mighty pharaohs, intriguing mummies and countless deities. The museum's Egyptian collection is among the most notable of the world.

Famous mummy collection

The famous mummies and finely decorated mummy cases are displayed in a special part of the museum. Here, you will come face to face with 13 human mummies and 25 animal mummies. In a reconstructed workshop, you can actually see how the ancient Egyptians mummified their deceased.

Farmers and scribes

The presentation follows the course of history. The oldest objects date from the prehistory. In the ages to come, the great Egyptian Empire would be established on the banks of the Nile. How that came about is told by an Egyptian farmer. But if you want to know about the development of the Egyptian script, you will have to consult a scribe. He will immediately teach you how to read some of the hieroglyphs.

Pharaohs and the Egyptian hereafter

Queen Hatshepsut, one of the first women pharaohs, will guide you around the Egyptian court, with its display of power and pomp and circumstance. She will introduce you to famous pharaohs, such as Tutankhamen and Akhenaten. They were in a position to do all things possible to be assured of a good afterlife. The exquisite statues, splendid frescoes and impressive tombs all prove that the hereafter was extremely important to the ancient Egyptians. The 'mummy girl' Sensaos, who died 2000 years ago, when the Romans had submitted the former superpower Egypt to their rule, has 'survived' her own death. Her face has been carefully reproduced by means of modern scanning techniques, and as a result you can look into her eyes as if she were still alive.
