Search the museum’s collection
This search page enables you to see more than 140,000 objects from the collection of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities. The database is still expanding and contains objects from all sections of the museum’s collection: Ancient Egypt and Nubia, the Classical World (Greeks, Romans, Etruscans), the ancient Near East and the early Netherlands (up to 1600 AD).
- Collection data and images from the National Museum of Antiquities are freely available for re-use by developers under a Creative Commons license. Object descriptions (metadata) and images (content) are made available under a CC0 licence.
- The database is only available in Dutch. You will need to search using Dutch keywords.
- You can also search using part of a word. Type the letters in the box ‘zoeken’ and add an asterisk: e.g. mum*
- The texts derive from a scientific register and are therefore most accessible to readers with some knowledge of the subject. Some texts, or parts of texts, are written in English.

kop
kop Head of a man, still partly wrapped in 2-6 layers of linen bandages covering the top and rear of the skull, the right jaw, and the chin. The bandages have been applied in transverse and concentric directions, the linen is a medium-fine warp-faced tabby weave (about 14 x 32 threads/cm2). The linen is mostly black in colour and glossy patches betray the use of a resinous material. The skin is black and much cracked and fissured, but yellowish white and much better preserved at the right side behind the ear and around the occiput. The hair seems to have been shaven off and there are no remains of facial hair. There is some loss of skin over the zygomatic arches. The eyelids are completely lost, the eye sockets contain balls of linen. The soft tissues of the nose are lost, but the interior structures seem to be intact and there is no open connection with the interior of the skull. The lips are lost and the teeth largely uncovered, apparently well preserved but showing some abrasion. The ears have shrivelled and are partly lost. The stump of the neck is long and contains several cervical vertebrae; the posterior part of some vertebrae has broken off. There is an open connection to the oral cavity on the ventral side of the cervical spine. The cervical canal is open. The head has been flexed to the chest.
