Saqqara. Living in a city of the Dead
More than 40 years ago the National museum of Antiquities started with excavations in Saqqara (approx. 30 km from Cairo) to rediscover the archaeological context of for example the famous statues of Maya and Merit housed in the museum. Saqqara, for centuries, had been the most significant necropolis of Memphis, one of the most important administrative and religious centers of pharaonic Egypt. This publication shows you around in the city of the dead and its surroundings taking into account the research questions raised by the NWO project ‘The Walking Dead at Saqqara’. You will get to know who was buried where, why and how the necropolis was incorporated in daily life in ancient Egypt.
