PALMA 23: Collecting Ancient Europe
National Museums and the search for European Antiquities in the 19th-early 20th century
During the 19th and early 20th-century archaeology developed as a scientific field. Many national museums were founded throughout Europe and started collecting archaeological objects from various countries and periods of time from Prehistory until the Medival period. The papers in this volume discuss several collections in national museums in Europe, track the networks along which the collections were aqcuired and give an insight in archaeological museum collection history as well as in the development of archaeology as a science.
